“OUR FIRST COMPREHENSIVE RESEARCH PROJECT WITH THE UNIVERSITY OF WESTERN SYDNEY ($50,000)”

BACKGROUND OF THE PROJECT

The Middle East economy and its society are undergoing fast and significant transitions and several economic adjustments are afoot. A constant problem in the Middle East has been violent conflicts and consequent heavy defence burdens that have compromised economic growth and regional development. Our research seeks to understand the impacts of conflicts on economic and financial sustainability of the region and its implications for Western Sydney.

The future economic opportunities in the Middle East will also play a major role for the Australian economy as the ethnic networks in small and high-tech businesses based in Western Sydney can offer significant scope for internationalisation of small and medium-sized firms of Western Sydney.

KEY RESEARCH QUESTIONS

Despite the potential role of the Middle East in promoting economic and social development in Western Sydney, little is known about the longer-term consequences of economic and military developments in the Middle East and their implications for Western Sydney. Our research will examine the economic and financial sustainability in the Middle East, which will offer important insights for businesses based in Western Sydney.

Our research will examine the economic and financial sustainability in the Middle East, which will offer important insights for many businesses of Western Sydney that can benefit increased international businesses between Western Sydney and the Middle East.

RESEARCH IN PROGRESS (2014-2016)

Our research will offer answers to the following questions: Can the defence burden of the Middle East be reduced to release resources for sustainable development of the region? Can Australia help the Middle East to achieve sustainable development? Can Western Sydney benefit from sustainable development in the Middle East? Is the adjustment process in the Middle East good for the Western Sydney economy? In other words, can the economic development in the Middle East be utilised for the economic and social benefits of Western Sydney? Despite a significant progress of research in the context of the Middle East, many of the above questions are not adequately answered. Our project, by developing a time-tested and acceptable framework of economic interlinkages between defence burden and economic growth,  seeks to fill this gap in knowledge.
